Globalization and Recovery

The Globalization and Recovery subcomponent is looking at fisheries and fishing-dependent communities of western Newfoundland in the context of broader regional and globalization processes, especially those affecting labour markets and markets for fish products.

The following questions are guiding the research:

  • How is the fishing industry functioning in the post-moratorium period and what are its future prospects?
  • How can we best understand the current situation of and prospects for communities that have been dependent on the fishery?
  • How have these communities adjusted to the collapse of the groundfish fisheries?
  • What new opportunities are being pursued and what challenges exist, particularly in terms of labour and markets?

Areas for particular studies are Burnt Islands and Port Aux Basques on the southwest coast, St. Anthony on the northeastern corner of the Great Northern Peninsula, and Port au Choix, about half way up the western coast of the Northern Peninsula.

Results and findings from this research will be posted on the CURRA website as they become available.
