Governance Options for St. Paul's Inlet
The purpose of the work in St. Paul's was to document the current and historical uses of the Inlet and look at St. Paul's in terms of its natural, social and governance systems. We also talked to the community about the ecological, economic, social and cultural importance of St. Paul's Inlet and explored possible governance options with community members. Master's student Jessica Kukac spent a number of months living in the community and has completed her MA thesis entitled "Capturing the Importance of Natural Resources and Future Activities in St. Paul's, Newfoundland." We organized a public meeting and workshop in the community in December of 2008. The purpose of the meeting was to present to the community findings from research carried out in that area over the past several years and to receive feedback. The workshop provided an opportunity for key members of the St. Paul's community, government officials, and local organizations to explore opportunities and challenges for the future. Conservation Corp intern Ian Murphy followed up on this work and developed a sustainability assessment for the town to help it access government funding and to provide a model for sustainability assessments for other similar communities.
