Bonne Bay Marine Station, Norris Point, NL. November 9th to 18th, 2012. Led by Chris Brookes, internationally renowned radio documentary maker. The CURRA Radio Documentary Production Workshop was open to CURRA students, researchers, community partners and to representatives of community groups in the Bonne Bay region. It was designed to contribute to the capacity to use radio documentaries as a research and knowledge mobilization tool within the CURRA and by other organizations in the Bonne Bay region. The Voice of Bonne Bay Community Radio Station was a key partner in the CURRA Symposium and several VOBB volunteers participated in the workshop. Instructor Chris Brooke introduced participants to a broad range of radio/audio documentary productions, explored the whys and wherefores of recording sound and voice, equipment options, storytelling and dramaturgy, working with interviewees, structure, editing, mixing and narration. Workshop participants generated individual draft radio documentaries on a broad range of subjects by the end of the workshop. Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, with support from the CURRA, Voice of Bonne Bay Community Radio Station, and the Bonne Bay Marine Station. This radio documentary is meant to capture the joy, fear, chaos and wonder that visitors of the Bonne Bay Marine Station experience when they encounter the fascinating creatures found in our touch tank. The touch tank contains a variety of marine organisms that are found locally in Bonne Bay. Each visitor has a completely different tactile experience when handling creatures such as a crab, starfish or moon snail.
